Our community volunteer, Sydney – Withrow Park Farmers’ Market
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I live in Leslieville “sssh! don’t tell”, but love the Riverdale community. When I’m not at the market I am studying to be a midwifery student at Ryerson University. I’m very passionate about health care and women’s rights. I also write a lifestyle blog and spend a lot of time shopping at thrift stores. Recently I got a bike and I am loving exploring the city on two wheels!
What inspired you to volunteer with Withrow Park Farmers’ Market?
About three years ago, I came by the market to do some shopping and I loved the atmosphere. Everyone was so friendly and it was such a nice part of the city. After talking to the vendors, I realized that without the support of volunteers, the market wouldn’t be such a special, welcoming place and I knew I wanted to get involved.
What has the experience been like so far?
It has been a great way to stay active and engaged in the community. I have enjoyed staffing the information table, selling coffee and answering people’s questions. I’ve been able to meet lots of interesting vendors during set up each week and had the opportunity to be creative by decorating the advertising blackboards, taking photos and contributing to the blog.
What’s your favourite aspect of being a volunteer?
I love being at a neighbourhood event talking to all the different people who stop by. I like feeling like I am being of service to the community while having a great time.
What’s on your market shopping list?
Each week I make sure to pick up some fresh bread, cheese and a special sweet treat. I also try to buy whatever seasonal produce is available and use it to make a delicious dinner on Saturday night. I am really looking forward to the strawberries that should be here in another couple of weeks!
