Meet our volunteer Marty – Withrow Park Farmers’ Market – 2014
Tell us something about yourself?
My name is Marty. I was born and raised in New York City. I went to live in Florida 13 years ago, which is where I reside now. Each year I come to Canada to stay for a couple of months in the summer. I hopefully plan to immigrate to Canada in the future.
What inspired you to volunteer with Withrow Market?
I was introduced to John Zeus “Zeus” by my partner, who had worked with him in the past. I have been looking for something to do while vacationing here in Canada. I have a passion for working with children, since I had been a nanny most of my life. I love to work with the elderly as well and am hoping to volunteer in a seniors home soon. Zeus told us about the Withrow Park Farmers’ Market and he sent me information that I found very interesting. The timing was perfect since I was looking for a volunteer activity that was fun, and worthwhile.
What has the experience been like?
Working at the market has been a wonderful experience because I have met many great people. The vendors and the market volunteers share their knowledge and experience which has been a blessing to me. It has made my stay here in Canada very enjoyable.
What is your favourite aspect of being a volunteer?
My favorite aspect of being a volunteer is meeting the children, the vendors, and people in the market. Lauren, and the Arts and Crafts volunteers at the market, Gurpreet, Ada, and Chelsea are kind, gentle, loving, and amazing with the children. Coming to the market fills my heart with joy and I look forward to Saturdays!
What’s on your farmers’ market shopping list?
I love the bread, strawberries, ginger cookies, croissants, and the beautiful flowers they sell at the market. I plan to try lots of other products throughout the season.
